Scan and review Gmail on iPhone

On iPhone, connect Gmail separately, scan selected dates within the last 30 days and review matching finance emails before saving. This is not access to notifications from other apps.

Find it: iOS > Settings > Track Gmail

Worked examples use sample data, not your account. Reference screenshots show the current app controls in a Windows preview; their example amounts may differ from this lesson. Android system prompts vary by device.

Step 1

Start here

  1. iOS > Settings > Track Gmail

On iPhone, connect Gmail separately, scan selected dates within the last 30 days and review matching finance emails before saving. This is not access to notifications from other apps.

Step 2

How to use it

  1. Open Settings > Track Gmail while signed in to the Pennie account you want to use. Read the access explanation before choosing Connect Gmail.
  2. Google grants read-only access to the whole Gmail mailbox, not permission limited to finance emails. Pennie checks for supported transaction emails in your selected currency and keeps short extracts locally.
  3. Under Scan emails, use Choose Gmail categories above Date range. Select one or more categories available for your Gmail account, such as Primary, Updates, Promotions or Social. After saving, use Change Gmail categories to revise them; no category is silently selected for you.
  4. Choose Today, 7 days or 30 days, or set From and To within the last 30 days. Tap Scan selected dates. The range selects dates, not a guarantee of matching transactions.
  5. Watch the dedicated progress dialog. Stop & close stops the current work; saved scan progress and staged reviews can be continued where available. Open History for scan details.
  6. Waiting for Google means Google has temporarily limited requests. Pennie waits and retries automatically, respects Google's retry timing and uses smaller batches. You can still choose Stop & close; successfully checked emails and prepared reviews stay saved.
  7. Automatic quota waits share a 60-second allowance across the scan, not per email. If Google requires a longer delay or the limit persists, Google has paused your scan shows retry guidance without a running spinner. Use Retry when allowed or Review emails to open saved reviews. Reconnecting Gmail does not replenish Google's quota.
  8. Open Review Gmail or a marked review date. Free manual scans do not require AI. Eligible free users unlock a review date with an ad for 24 hours; ad-free and Premium access have different conditions.
  9. Check the source extract, amount, date, category, subcategory and transaction direction. Correct the fields and review possible duplicates before Save.
  10. AI preparation is optional and needs cloud-AI consent and available usage. Eligible Premium access can enable automatic preparation and optional automatic saving; leave these off for review-first operation.
  11. Review the daily reminder separately. Disconnect Gmail when finished with the connection; saved transactions remain, unsaved email reviews are removed and short duplicate-check history is retained for 30 days.

Step 3

Important details

A Pennie account and a Gmail connection are separate. Google or Apple sign-in to Pennie does not itself grant mailbox access, and Google Drive backup uses separate authorisation.

Scanning is user-initiated. iOS does not let Pennie read arbitrary notifications from bank, payment or other apps. This Gmail workflow is not Android notification monitoring.

Category selection filters the scan, not the Google permission grant. Sent, Drafts, Spam and Trash are excluded. Date presets change the range; Scan selected dates starts that range, while retrying an existing dialog resumes its range.

A known daily Google quota is not automatically retried; wait for Google to reset it. Temporary-limit recovery allows at most five quota retries per request phase and 60 seconds of total quota waiting. This is not a whole-scan timeout or a one-second-per-email guarantee.

Retrying does not redownload already saved email results. While the app remains open, a new attempt respects the remaining cooldown. The in-memory cooldown is not retained across app restarts.

With email AI off, manual review remains available. If enabled, bounded financial extracts can be sent to Pennie's cloud AI. Do not describe Gmail OAuth as access to finance emails only.

You can also revoke access in your Google Account. The mailbox must be disconnected before switching to a different Gmail account.

Screens show the actual current Gmail pages on Windows with synthetic email records and labelled sample ad art. They do not prove Google OAuth, ad delivery or native iPhone execution.
