Step 1
Your Dashboard, explained
- Start with the current month
- Use saved transactions to build your picture
Welcome to Pennie. Let's take a simple tour of your Dashboard.
The month at the top tells you which month's budget and expenses you are viewing.
All the figures in this worked example are sample data.
Step 2
Understand the three totals
- Recorded budget / income: INR 30,000
- Saved expenses: INR 12,000
- Net: INR 18,000 - not your bank balance
Total Budget reflects the income and budget entries you have recorded this month.
Total Expense shows your saved expenses.
Here, thirty thousand minus twelve thousand leaves a Net Balance of eighteen thousand rupees.
This is not a live bank balance.
Step 3
Where to add your entries
- Budget: tap the small +
- Purchase: tap Add Transaction
- Save before expecting totals to change
To record your budget, use the small plus beside Total Budget.
To record a purchase, use Add Transaction.
Review the details and save your entry.
Capturing a finance notification alone does not mean a transaction has been saved.
Step 4
Check savings and goal progress
- Scroll to Interest Balances
- Tap Savings to expand details
- Read the balance, target and progress
Scroll down to Interest Balances. Tap Savings to expand your tracked savings categories.
Our Emergency Fund has seventy five thousand towards a one lakh rupee target,
so it is seventy five percent complete.
These balances follow your recorded activity and configured terms.
Step 5
Separate borrowing from money lent
- Tap Debt to view its categories
- Read what you owe
- Keep money owed to you separate
Tap Debt to view your borrowing and money lent.
The Personal Loan is money you owe.
Money lent is owed to you, and is shown separately.
Use these recorded balances and terms to understand your position, rather than treating them as bank-confirmed statements.
Step 6
See what needs your attention
- Read the next due date and status
- Tap a reminder to edit
- Use Add reminder for a new one
Transaction Reminders show upcoming dates and status.
Tap a reminder to edit it, or choose Add reminder to create one.
A feature unlock may appear before the editor.
Reminders help you remember a payment; they do not make the payment for you.
Step 7
Keep recurring costs visible
- Read each subscription's amount and frequency
- Tap a card to open its linked transaction
- Removing tracking does not cancel billing
Active subscriptions keep your recurring items visible.
Check each item's amount and frequency.
Tap its card to open the linked transaction.
The displayed total is not necessarily a monthly forecast,
and removing an item from Pennie does not cancel billing with its provider.
Step 8
Find where your spending goes
- Match slice colours to the legend
- Read each category's amount and percentage
- Tap a slice to highlight it
Spending breakdown shows this month's saved expenses by category.
Match the slice colours to the names, amounts and percentages below.
Here, groceries account for half the spending.
Tap a slice to highlight it. This does not filter the entire Dashboard.
Step 9
Compare six months at a glance
- Tap a month to select its net
- Green +: surplus; red -: deficit
- Automatic interest entries are excluded
Net trend compares your last six months.
Tap a month to select its net value.
Green positive values show a surplus, and red negative values show a deficit.
This is recorded budget or income minus expenses, with automatic interest entries excluded.
Step 10
Open the detail you need
- View Expenses: expense history
- View Reports: deeper local analysis
- Need Help: the Pennie guide
At the bottom, View Expenses opens your expense history,
and View Reports opens deeper analysis.
Need Help at the top opens the Pennie guide.
Next, we'll show how to record a monthly budget and save your first expense, one step at a time.
