Worked examples use sample data, not your account. Reference screenshots show the current app controls in a Windows preview; their example amounts may differ from this lesson. Android system prompts vary by device.

Step 1

Check whether the payment is saved

  1. Confirm merchant, date and total
  2. Search the saved payment first
  3. Do not automatically count the receipt again

Before saving a scanned receipt, check whether its payment already exists in Transactions, for example from a bank notification.

Compare the merchant, date and total. A similar amount alone is not proof of the same expense.

Step 2

Choose Attach receipt

  1. Use Attach receipt to an existing expense
  2. Select the actual matching payment
  3. Review the offered candidates

Choose Attach receipt to an existing expense, then explicitly select the matching saved payment.

Pennie offers candidates near the receipt date and total, but your selection must establish the match. It does not silently assume semantic duplicates.

Step 3

Confirm without adding spending

  1. The existing payment stays unchanged
  2. The receipt is attached to it
  3. Do not also create another expense

Confirm the attachment rather than choosing a new one-expense or item-expense save.

The verified linked example retains the original three-hundred-and-thirty payment and adds no spending; it does not replace that payment's note or amount.

Step 4

Understand duplicate-file protection

  1. The identical file is protected on replay
  2. New photographs have different fingerprints
  3. Always check the actual saved payment

Reusing the identical receipt file is protected against another save.

A new photo has a different file fingerprint, so this is not a guarantee that every image of the same receipt is automatically recognized. Keep checking the actual saved payment.
