Step 1
Add your first expense
- Start on Dashboard
- Tap Add Transaction
- All amounts and dates are sample data
Let's save a purchase in Pennie.
Our sample Dashboard has thirty thousand rupees of recorded budget and twelve thousand of expenses.
Tap Add Transaction to record a five hundred rupee grocery purchase.
Step 2
Choose Expense and category
- Select Expense
- Choose Groceries for this example
- Choose the purpose, not how you paid
Check that Expense is selected.
Choose the category that describes what you bought; our example uses Groceries.
The selected category is shown here.
A payment method or bank name does not tell you what the purchase was for.
Step 3
Check the amount and date
- Amount: INR 500
- Use the actual purchase date
- Example: 3 October 2026
Enter five hundred in Amount and check the currency symbol.
Use the actual purchase date; our sample is the third of October.
The date decides which month's saved totals include this expense.
Step 4
Add useful detail
- Sub-category and note are optional
- Sample note: Weekly groceries
- Leave Subscription off for this purchase
Scroll to Details and notes.
Add an optional sub-category or note so you can recognize the purchase later.
We use Weekly groceries.
Leave Subscription unmarked for this ordinary one-off purchase; recurring tracking is covered separately.
Step 5
Choose your spending type
- Find Spending Type
- Choose Essential or Non-essential
- Essential is selected in this example
Under Spending Type, choose Essential or Non-essential based on your own purpose.
We mark these groceries Essential.
This is your budgeting judgment, not a bank classification.
You can review it before saving.
Step 6
Review and save once
- Check Groceries, INR 500, Expense and date
- Tap Save once
- Then select Dashboard from Transactions
At You're adding, check Groceries, five hundred rupees, Expense and the date.
Tap Save once.
Saving opens Transactions; select Dashboard to check the result.
A reminder or a captured notification alone is not this saved expense.
Step 7
Check the updated totals
- Budget stays INR 30,000
- Expenses become INR 12,500
- Net becomes INR 17,500
Expenses now total twelve thousand five hundred rupees.
The recorded budget is unchanged, so Net Balance becomes seventeen thousand five hundred.
These are saved-ledger totals, not a live bank balance.
Do not save the same purchase a second time.
