Worked examples use sample data, not your account. Reference screenshots show the current app controls in a Windows preview; their example amounts may differ from this lesson. Android system prompts vary by device.

Step 1

Two permissions, two different jobs

  1. Separate posting from reading
  2. These are Pennie's setup cards

Pennie separates permission to show its own alerts from access to read financial alerts from other apps.

Step 2

Manage reading access on your Android phone

  1. Settings > Track Finance Notifications
  2. Use Manage notification access

On your Android phone, open Settings, then Track Finance Notifications.

Step 3

Allow notifications means posting Pennie alerts

  1. Review prompts and finance reminders
  2. Not permission to read another app

Allow notifications lets Pennie post its own review prompts and finance reminders.

It does not allow reading other apps, and it does not enable cloud AI or Drive backup.

Step 4

Reading access can work in the background

  1. Read financial alerts from selected apps
  2. Processing starts on your device

Notification access lets Pennie read financial alerts from selected apps, including in the background.

Processing starts on your device. Choose which notification apps to monitor separately.

Step 5

Opening settings is not granting permission

  1. Open settings starts the permission choice
  2. Check the state after returning

Open settings starts the permission choice on your phone. Opening that screen is not the same as granting access.

Here the real button reaches a safe preview callback. Reading access remains Required.

Step 6

Posting alone does not allow capture

  1. Synthetic posting-only example
  2. Reading access is still Required

This synthetic example enables posting only. Pennie can show alerts, but reading access is still Required.

Posting permission alone does not expose Choose notification apps or complete the setup.

Step 7

Reading alone does not finish setup

  1. Synthetic reading-only example
  2. Choose apps appears; posting remains Required

This synthetic example enables reading access only. Choose notification apps becomes visible.

Posting remains Required, so Finish setup stays disabled. The two permissions are not interchangeable.

Step 8

Both inputs enable Finish setup

  1. Synthetic both-enabled example
  2. No actual onboarding completion here

When your phone reports both permissions, the actual setup screen enables Finish setup.

Both inputs here are synthetic. We do not press Finish setup or claim an Android permission grant.

Step 9

Cloud AI remains a separate choice

  1. Reading access does not enable cloud AI
  2. Permission and available AI usage still apply

Reading access does not turn on cloud AI. Cloud analysis needs its own account permission and available AI usage.

You can keep local tracking and manual entry without enabling cloud AI.

Step 10

You can revoke reading access

  1. Use Android's Notification access controls
  2. Manual entry remains available

You can revoke reading access in Android's Notification access settings.

The setup screen then hides app selection and disables Finish setup. You can still add transactions manually.
